FAQs
How do I know if online learning is right for me?
A successful online learner is a motivated self-starter and is committed to the success of his or her education. MCVA offers a flexible alternative for students, but it is not an easier option than traditional schools. All courses are written at or above grade level and require an average of one to two hours of focused study on a daily basis to complete one course within the traditional semester time frame.
Is MCVA available to everyone?
MCVA is a public school serving grades 5-12. If you reside in the Madison County School district, you are eligible to attend. There is no cost to attend but students are required to provide their own computer or Chromebook, as well as transportation to and from the learning labs.
How do I enroll full-time in MCVA?
All students (new and returning) must register through PowerSchool Enrollment.
How does attendance work at MCVA?
Students attending the MCSS Virtual Academy must adhere to the Madison County Schools Attendance Policy and meet the following criteria:
- Attend class each day (as monitored by the virtual school staff)
- Keep up with course assignments/pace
- Log in to courseware daily to document attendance.
- Physical attendance when directed by virtual staff.
A student’s failure to comply with such requirements may result in administrative action including, but not limited to, probation and/or a charge of truancy.
Can students participate in band, ROTC, and athletics?
Madison County Virtual Academy students may participate in band, athletics, and JROTC at the school where they are zoned to attend.
What if the student has questions or problems while taking a course?
Students are assigned an instructor for each course. Instructors are available daily via web conference, email, or in-person by appointment.
As a parent, will I be kept informed of my student's progress?
Yes. As a parent, you will likely receive more updates and information about your student's progress than ever before. We strongly feel that a parent's involvement in a child's education is the key to success. Our teachers are in frequent communication with parents.
